Left-Right, Wrong-Right : Get the Right way to prepare for IIFT exams

Percepts from MBA universe
IIFT has recently announced the date for its entrance exam for admissions 2012. The exam will be held across India at various test centers on November 27, 2011.

Now there are approximately four months left for the exam. If you are a serious IIFT aspirant, then you should start your preparation and know the right strategies.

In this MBAUniverse.com article, the students of IIFT Delhi give you the right preparation strategy that will lead you to cracking the exam successfully. Preyoshi Ganguly, Megesh Kumar and Srinivas Raman tell you about the distinctive features of the IIFT entrance exam and the preparation strategy for it.

How is IIFT different from other MBA entrance exams?
The major difference between IIFT and the other exams is the section on General Awareness. “This section often makes the difference between qualifying and disqualifying,” says Preyoshi Ganguly an alumnus of IIFT New Delhi.

Another factor which differentiates the exam is the number of questions. IIFT 2010 paper had 135 questions, compared to IIFT 2009 paper which had 122 questions. On the other hand, CAT has only 60 questions and XAT 2011 paper had 101 questions. “IIFT exam paper has two hours and too many questions that tests selection capability and solving ability. Always a tough one to crack,” mentions Srinivas Raman another student of IIFT.

Preparation strategy for IIFT
According to the IIFT toppers, there is not much difference in the preparation strategies between IIFT and other MBA entrance exams like CAT, XAT, FMS etc. as the sections remain the same as that of Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning. But the factor which you should keep in mind while preparing is the speed.

The IIFT toppers mention that speed should be taken highly into consideration as without speed it will be difficult for you to complete the paper and obtain the cut off marks. As Srinivas says, “You should be much faster in calculations and do loads of general reading. Few weeks before IIFT exam, start practicing speed mathematics.”

But accuracy is also equally important along with speed for the IIFT paper. “Focus more on speed without compromising on the correctness of the answer,” advises Magesh.

Another important aspect of the preparation which is separate from the other MBA entrance exams is the General Awareness section. For this, you can’t prepare at the last moment, but it is an ongoing process. As Preyoshi says, “Be up to date with the recent events. Reading newspapers everyday and glancing through a yearbook should do the trick.” Srinivas adds, “Few weeks before IIFT exam, start reading more into GK perspective.”

CAT over JMET-Winds of Change

Percepts from Pagal Guy
With lesser students appearing for JMET, IITs may end up considering CAT scores starting this year.

The Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET), used for admission to the two-year MBA programs offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) might be abolished starting this year.

Instead, a candidate's Common Admissions Test (CAT) score could be considered for the admission process, Prof MR Ravi, Vice Chairman, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), IIT Delhi.
IIT Delhi was the organising institute for JMET last year.

"In the review meeting of JMET held in June 2011 at IIT Delhi, it was realised that the number of takers for JMET were lesser than last year," Ravi said, adding that only about 30,000 candidates appeared for the test.

Keeping in mind the amount of resources required to conduct a national level entrance test, the senates of the various IITs realised that the turnout for the test was not sufficient to warrant continuing the test.

However, the final decision about whether JMET will be conducted this year or not is yet to be made. The next meeting on this matter will be held sometime in September this year.

Officials at the GATE office of IIT Bombay and IIT Roorkee confirmed that the IITs might not conduct JMET this year but refused to add more to the information.

An official at the GATE office of IIT Delhi said that if JMET was abolished, the IITs would use his CAT score for admissions.

Each IITs might have different cut-offs. However, the official added that the decision was yet to be finalised and nothing had been decided about cut-offs as of now.

JMET is one of the five tests accepted by the All India  Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved b-schools as well.

INDIAN MBA the Corporate way

Percepts from www.mbauniverse.com

Big corporate houses like the NIIT, Future Group, Educomp, HCL Technologies, Jindal, and others are foraying in the MBA education domain in a big way by establishing Universities and Institutions that have emphasis on innovation and quality. All this is leading to the corporatization of MBA.

The second edition of Indian Management Conclave, which is going to be held on August 11-12 in New Delhi, will discuss this important trend under the overall theme of “Building a Great B-school: What’s the new DNA!”.

Eminent industry leaders will speak on the topic ‘Corporatization of MBA: Lessons & Road ahead'. The speakers who will share their insights on this topic with the gathering of VCs, Directors, Policy Makers will be Mr. Harpreet Singh, Executive Director, Educomp Raffles Higher Education Ltd; Mr. Rajeev Shorey, President, NIIT University and many other renowned industry leaders.

This session will revolve around two broad questions, what has triggered the need to start B-schools by the corporate. And secondly, where do they see themselves in future. According to top experts the main focus of corporate backed B Schools is on the employability of the students. They feel that there is a gap in the industry demand and the management education offered by the bottom-of-pyramid MBA institutes, which form the bulk of the MBA education sector. The focus is to bridge this gap.

The session will further analyse the trends relating to corporatization of MBA education. With more than 3500 B schools in the country the market is no doubt crowded, but what is encouraging is that it is not stopping the entry of new entrants. New B Schools are being established in the country with strong backing of corporate houses inspite of the overcrowded MBA market.

It is important for more entrants to come as the country needs more good quality B schools. With more and more entrants only the quality conscious B schools will survive in the challenging MBA education domain, which will be of huge benefit to the MBA aspirant community.

Currently many B Schools are witnessing a shake-out with seats going vacant. The B schools beyond top 100 are looking for students with big newspaper advertisements. But interestingly this kind of scenario is being considered as an opportunity rather than a threat by few organizations that are setting up new B schools in the country.

These organizations are coming in with strong industry backing for setting up their B schools. Also they have chalked out the strategy for maintaining quality and student satisfaction. These new B-schools are in the process of developing a new DNA for a smoother road in the future.

IMC 2011 will witness participation of VCs of universities, government policy makers, Deans & Directors of IIMs and other leading B-schools, top officials from accreditation bodies and other stakeholders.

Some of the other eminent speakers who will address the Indian Management Conclave include: Dr. Pritam Singh, Director General, IMI, New Delhi; Ms Savita Mahajan, Deputy Dean, ISB Hyderabad & CEO, ISB Mohali Campus; Dr. M Rammohan Rao, Professor and Dean Emeritus, ISB Hyderabad; Dr. P Rameshan, Director, IIM Rohtak; Prof MJ Xavier, Director, IIM Ranchi; Dr. Bala Balachandran, Founder & Dean, Great Lakes Institute Of Management, Chennai; Dr. Rajan Saxena, Vice-Chancellor, NMIMS Mumbai; Dr. Eileen Peacock, Senior Vice President and Chief Officer, Asia, AACSB International; Prof LU Wei, Associate Dean, Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiaotong University, China; Dr. Bibek Banerjee, Director & Academic Mentor IMT Ghaziabad; Prof Bhimaraya Metri, Dean, Strathclyde SKIL Business School; Dr. N Ravichandran, Director, IIM Indore; Dr. Sesha Iyer, Director, S. CAT 2011 Avatar - Friend or foe

CAT ’11

Views

The change in CAT 2011 module has caused aspirants looking forward to crack the entrance test to put their aspirations on hold. The candidates are apprehensive about the changes and the surprises it will throw and plan to test the waters before sitting for the exam.
From 2011, CAT will have two sections instead of three. The first will focus on quantitative ability and data interpretation and the second on verbal ability and logical reasoning. Candidates will have 70 minutes to answer 30 questions within each section with an onscreen countdown timer. Once the time ends for the first section, they will move to the second and will no longer be able to go back to the first. Although new in the computer-based format, this method was previously practiced few years ago too.
The candidates will also be provided 15 minutes tutorials before the examination starts. Including the tutorials timing, examination will be of two hours and 35 minutes — (140 minutes of exam and 15 minutes of tutorials)
Hitesh Devalia, Director, Endeavor management coaching institute says, “This change is good for serious CAT aspirants as they will be able to con
centrate well in one particular section. However, the number of CAT aspirants appearing for the test will go down as most students would like to wait for a year to see the impact of the change.”
According to experts, the advantages of the new module are that students will be able to channelise their energy in one particular section and thus will be able to get the best out of that section. They will have to manage only two cut-offs, unlike last year, where students had to balance their score in all three sections.
“However, the cons of the modules are that students who finish a section quickly, will not be able to move on to the other section before time for that particular section is up” experts said.
CAT 2011 will be a second attempt for Bhavesh Nainani. He says, “The module has its own advantages and disadvantages. This process will make sure that better people get selected. All the students will be given proportionate time and will be expected to per
form in a particular time frame.”
He adds, “I will be taking mid-slot or end-slot as I want to see what students have to say about the new module. As this will be the first year that the process has undergone some change, I would like to wait, watch and then appear for the test.”
Eljo Kurian, 20, will be appearing for the first time. He says, “I will go with the flow as I don’t know how the previous years were. I think, with the change, time management will be much easier specially for me as I am a commerce student and hence I would be able to focus more on Quant and Data Interpretation.”
The number of test days has been retained at 20 within the window — from 22 October to 18 November 2011. This would provide candidates with the flexibility of choosing a suitable test day based on their convenience. For those candidates who are differently abled, additional support will be provided as required.
