Ross Establishes India Initiatives under Faculty Director M.S. Krishnan

Dean Alison Davis-Blake has established the Ross School of Business India Initiatives and appointed M.S. Krishnan as faculty director. Krishnan is the Joseph Handleman Professor of Business Information Technology and a Hallman Research Fellow at Ross. The India Initiatives comprise, but are not limited to, the C.K. Prahalad Initiative and the Center for Global Resource Leverage: India.
As faculty director of India Initiatives, Krishnan will report to Associate Dean for Global Initiatives Bill Lanen. He will help coordinate academic and research activities, as well as alumni and corporate outreach across India. This includes custom executive education, in-country student projects, and new knowledge creation, among other things.
Krishnan also will help Lanen and Davis-Blake identify and evaluate new opportunities that advance the Ross School's global agenda. Current corporate partners in the Ross School's India Initiatives include GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., ICICI Group, the Tata Group, and TVS Logistics Services.
"Krishnan is the ideal person for this role," says Davis-Blake. "He has extensive relationships across India. He brings deep knowledge of the culture, the economy, and trends around innovation. He regularly consults with executives in India and understands their needs. He also knows what our faculty are interested in and what our students are interested in."
The Ross School's long history with India is due in large part to the late C.K. Prahalad, who joined the business school faculty in 1977 and remained here until his death in April 2010. In 1994 Prahalad helped establish the school's Global Program for Management Development: India, an open-enrollment executive program that continues to serve the country's business leaders. Widely acknowledged as one of the world's top strategy thinkers, Prahalad worked with Indian firms and Ross faculty and students to develop research around Base of the Pyramid studies, co-creation, and innovation.
The Ross School established the C.K. Prahalad Initiative in 2010 to continue the late scholar's work. In April 2011 the school signed a memorandum of understanding with the Confederation of Indian Industry, India's largest business association, which had a strong bond with Prahalad. That bond continues under Krishnan, a longtime collaborator of Prahalad's and co-author of his final book, The New Age of Innovation.
"It is clear that the locus of growth in the world economy is shifting to emerging markets like India," Krishnan says. "Hence it is important for global business leaders and academic scholars to deeply understand the challenges and opportunities in these markets. C.K.'s foresight enabled Ross to establish an executive education presence in India for the last 17 years. I look forward to building further on this to integrate faculty scholarship and the student experience through action-based projects that enrich our knowledge about this market."
In addition to the India Initiatives, the Ross Global Initiatives portfolio includes the Executive MBA Program, the Global MBA Program, the East Asia Management Development Center, and the Center for International Business Education and Research.
“Thanks to Krishnan's expertise in India, I can explore global opportunities for Ross in other key regions like Latin America, East Asia, Africa, and Europe," Lanen says. "We are focusing on India now, because of the scale that exists already. As we further coordinate our efforts under the India Initiatives, we'll be able to determine the best ways to replicate our success toward new options in other countries."
Krishnan will soon hire a staff director to support the India Initiatives. Paul Gediman, who served as executive director of the C.K. Prahalad Initiative since its establishment, resigned in August 2011; future staff support for the C.K. Prahalad Initiative will be provided by the staff director of India Initiatives.
Krishnan currently serves as faculty director of the Center for Global Resource Leverage: India, a research entity focused on globalization in general and India in particular. He will continue this work as part of the India Initiatives, covering topics that explore next practices of managers, including how they leverage global resources and access new markets.

Asian School of Business announces scholarships for rural NE students

The Asian School of Business (ASB), a leading B-school in India, is proactively encouraging admission of North East students with rural background for its flagship post-graduate programme. Accordingly, in collaboration with the charitable George M Thomas Foundation, ASB will be offering scholarships of up to 50 per cent on the full-term fee for one student from each of the Seven Sisters.
The new programme will groom MBA students who can meet the rising requirement of specially-trained managers for the burgeoning rural market, which is expected to triple in the next 15 years.
ASB Director Prof. S Rajeev, a 25-year IT veteran who had mentored Indian and Silicon Valley start-ups, is driving the thrust to develop Management Graduates who can drive the marketing thrust of Indian and multinational companies eyeing  the booming rural market. The next wave of growth in India is likely to be driven by rural India.
"Every year, thousands of graduate students travel from the North Eastern states to different parts of the country --- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Kolkata etc. --- to pursue post graduate courses. This unique offer provided by ASB gives the students of these seven states to pursue their business administration course in the beautiful state of Kerala," said Prof. Rajeev.
He also added that students from the North East will find Kerala to be their second home taking into consideration that the weather and greenery which these students feel at their native states will be quite similar in a place like Kerala.
According to Mckinsey, the rural consumption market is likely to triple by 2020 to reach $600 billion from the current level of $190 billion. This is driven both by the increasing income levels and the shifting consumption patterns, hence providing a plethora of opportunities.
He said ASB is proactively encouraging admission of North Eastern students with rural background along with others for their flagship post-graduate programme.
"Students with such rural upbringing in the North Eastern states are better positioned to feel the pulse of the rural consumer. Our training will make them effective marketers who can relate to the rural ambience and this emerging economic segment more effectively," he said.
For students who are determined to make it big in rural marketing, ASB is offering scholarships and is facilitating bank loans to achieve their career goals, he added.
A unique programme that ASB is promoting, besides offer of free laptops, is a 50 per cent scholarship to one student each from North East Indian states who has completed his/her schooling in rural schools. Two students will be offered 25 per cent scholarship and ten students 10 per cent in a bid to discover and nurture rural talent.
These scholarships are being offered by George M Thomas Foundation. Mr. George M Thomas is the President of Trivandrum International School, Kerala's first international school incorporating Indian and British curriculum and courses. Mr. George M Thomas, an Oman based businessman is the Patron of ASB.
ASB, whose full-fledged eco-friendly residential campus designed by a well-known Singapore architectural firm, has state-of-the-art class-rooms, seminar halls and Wi-Fi facilities is located near the IT hub of Techno Park in Thiruvananthapuram.
The new courses that Prof. Rajeev is developing at the ASB cover areas such as rural marketing, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are considered pioneering initiatives in MBA programmes that are revamped to meet actual industry requirements.
Prof Rajeev is bringing to ASB his considerable teaching and industry consulting experience from IIMs in   Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Kozhikode, where he has taught strategy and innovation.
He holds a BTech in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, an MS in Computer Science from Syracuse University and MBA from Stanford Business School.
His technology and marketing background with Sun Microsystems, Siemens and Bell Labs has been leveraged to promote several entrepreneurial start-ups firms, both in Silicon Valley and in India.
He has been active in venture capital (VC) industry, advising several VC firms on their investments.

Revamping the MBA curriculum

In India, the number of MBA institutions is much higher than any other line of study.

Today, engineering, pharmaceutical and medical graduates pursue a postgraduate management course for any one of the two reasons — they want to shift or want to sharpen their skills to succeed in their own profession with the help of a management course. Today, there are about 4,500 business schools offering a masters programme in Management.

However, the major concern is ‘quality’ management education. How many business schools in India stand up to the global level? How many enjoy the status of international accreditations — AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB? How many institutions have strong corporate connections? How many have updated their curriculum after the global slow down? Only a handful.

We cannot develop the leaders of tomorrow with the existing curriculum and traditional classroom teaching alone. There is a widening gap between MBA programmes and the business world. If MBA graduates want to meet industry expectations, then there are real needs for the MBA institutions to understand today’s fast changing business-world and need to take a fresh look at MBA programmes.

Due to globalisation and global slowdown, business games in the industry are changing rapidly. There is a need for global leadership, cross-cultural understanding, entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. International accreditation agencies like AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS focus on these parameters to realise the strong bond between management programmes and the business world. In India, international accreditation is still new to B-schools and only a handful of premier institutions have applied for international accreditations. International accreditations help business schools to re-invent their MBA programme and lead the change, focusing on internationalisation and an updated curriculum to maintain the pace with industry.

International accreditation creates an opportunity for schools to work closely with the industry and alumni, thus bringing schools closer to ground reality and establishing a strong corporate connection. In the coming years, many institutions in India need to reap the benefits of international accreditations.

Developing responsible business leaders

It is imperative to revisit the MBA programme curriculum to cope with this kind of business environment. Two aspects are important while reinventing a programme: Learning within the boundaries of a business school and learning beyond the boundaries of a business school. Learning within the boundaries normally takes place through classroom input or interaction. This learning basically helps students understand concepts and theories of management. For effective learning within the boundaries of an institution, main antecedents, research-based faculty, innovative pedagogy, a digital library and other knowledge infrastructure are the deciding factors. For instance, in case of innovative pedagogy, the theatre technique may be one of the best ways to teach a module in the course and create interest amongst students.

Today, learning beyond the boundaries of a B-school has become important than classroom input within the institution. This encompasses global component like summer schools or a study trip abroad for about a week or two, intensive industry internships and spending a term abroad in a world-class business school for specialised courses.

These are very important to link theory with practice. Also, spending a term abroad alongside of 50-100 nationalities, definitely provides a cross-cultural experience and understanding, global exposure and networking opportunities. These parameters are very important to shape management graduates as global leaders.

Another approach to adding value to an MBA programme is by conducting Business Thought Leadership Series (BTLS). BTLS, conducted by CEOs, management thinkers and management gurus certainly add more colour to an MBA programme.

Thus, today’s changing business world needs global leaders who can make a difference. There is a need to adopt a holistic approach to developing MBA students in sync with the ever-changing managerial and leadership scenario in this borderless economy. Therefore, it is very important, for management institutions in India to reinvent MBA programmes through strong corporate connection, building a strong research base, achieving the status of international accreditation and going global.

No doubt, certain uncertainties were lurking in our minds at first, but the very first day of ours under special Induction Programme has assured us firmly that we are in our own country and among our own persons."

INSPIRATIONS - RAsmi Bansal ;Social entrepreneurs: 20 inspiring stories from India

Harvesting stories of people who have successfully committed themselves to social change is what author Rashmi Bansal is passionate about. Now, with her third book Bansal seeks to spread the work of idealists "who have found new ways to solve old problems."

"I want to spread the inspiring real stories of entrepreneurs who have made a difference in the lives of people around them," says Bansal whose first and second books featured entrepreneurs with and without MBA degrees respectively.

In her book "I Have a Dream" published by Westland Bansal portrays the stories of 20 "social entrepreneurs" who have used the principles of business to create a better world.

Divided into three sections -"Rainmakers" "Changemakers" and "Spiritual Capitalists", the book records stories of people like Bindeshwar Pathak, who started the Sulabh Movement for sanitation and hygiene in the country.

The tome also features "Parivartan", started by rights activist Arvind Kejriwal who activated the Right to Information movement at the grassroots level.

"The people featured here are unique because they may not have tasted success in the conventional sense but have created a difference in the lives of people around them" she says.

While "Mirakle Couriers" is about empowering the hearing impaired, "Goonj" is the story about aiding disaster hit people with clothes. "Akshaya Patra" is an emotional story of serving meals to the homeless.

Bansal's stories are a step in a similar direction followed in her first book venture "Stay Hungry Stay Foolish" which she says happened by pure chance she was approached by her alma mater IIM-A to do a project on MBA entrepreneurs.

It was followed by "Connect the Dots" on entrepreneurs without an MBA.

"There's a wave of entrepreneurship in India today and people need new role models from within the country. Come to think of it today India stories are becoming important discussion topics at places like the Harvard," she says.

The author who was a journalist once and had run her own youth magazine says "Youngsters today are always looking for role models and I hope they can find them in the individuals and stories I have featured in my books."

"I searched out these people partly based on what I read about them elsewhere, sometimes on the basis of recommendations of friends and partly led by gut feelings," says the Mumbai-based author who doubles up as a motivational speaker for youth.

"Often I had to coax the people featured here for interviews as they thought the credit should go to those working in their organisations rather than highlighting themselves," adds Bansal.

Writing about business and entrepreneurship, the author says, is what she loves the most. "I read a lot, on varied subjects and will always be a writer. Yes, the format may change. Who knows I might even write fiction."

!!M Ranchi - Getting Flexible

Fortnightly course for execs at IIM Ranchi

The Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (IIM-R) has some good news for working executives in Jharkhand who are planning to pursue MBA but cannot move out of the state. The institute has decided to start a post-graduate programme for working executives. The first session of the 18-month programme will start from September.

Director of IIM-R, M J Xavier, said there was huge demand for the course from different sectors. After preparing the course module it was put before the governing body for approval. "The governing board approved of the course and it was decided that each batch would have 40 candidates," said Xavier.
The course has been designed with an eye on demand in different industries, especially those working in the state. "We were getting requests from companies like the Central Coalfields Limited, Steel Authority of India Limited and Heavy Engineering Corporation," said Xavier.

CATCHING THE BRANCH

ISB programme for senior executives catches on

Gautam Ashok Choksi did his undergraduation in the US before plunging into his family business some 13-odd years ago. Though he enjoyed his work as vice president-finance of Hindustan Platinum Limited, his desire to obtain an MBA degree never left him.
“I was interested in getting world-class education but my business responsibilities did not give scope for me to join a full-time MBA course,” he told Business Standard.
Mumbai-based Choksi is now able to fulfil his ambition, thanks to the Post Graduate Programme in Management for Senior Executives (PGPMAX) started by the Hyderabad-based Indian School of Business a year ago. “The programme presented an ideal opportunity for me to pursue my studies,” Choksi said adding his perspective changed “tremendously” after joining the course.
According to Choksi, the programme not only updated him on the latest management principles but also gave him a broader insight into the areas, which were not his speciality.
Similar views were expressed by Shikha Ankur Bagai, who is a chief financial officer at IL&FS Securities Services Limited. “The programme is pretty well-designed. It is a combination of good faculty, good course content and, of course, the peer group,” she said, adding the fee of Rs 27.5 lakh for the 18-month programme was “worth it.”
ISB deputy dean, Deepak Chandra, said PGPMAX was aimed at making business leaders. The programme was designed on a schedule that minimises disruption of work. Participants would be on campus for a 7-day schedule of classroom learning every sixth week.
Having an average work experience of 16 years in diverse fields, Chandra said, the participants learn more from each other than from classroom lectures. “There will be a wider exposure because of diversity,” he said.
For instance, the first batch of PGPMAX in 2010-11 comprised students from as many as 14 fields including telecom, real estate, trading, automobile, finance, energy, consulting, FMCG, IT and even NGOs.
There is also a physician, Mahesh Ramvilas Joshi, who has joined the course. Joshi, who heads the emergency medicine unit at Apollo Hospitals, said his intention to join the course was basically to explore how emergency medicalcare could be expanded.
Stating that the entire fee was borne by him, the doctor said the course had come in handy for him in optimising the resources at his command for providing better healthcare.
Not just from the private sector, there are participants from the employee of the public sector too. One of them is Bhanu Pratap Yadav, who is working as executive director at Rural Electrification Corporation Limited.
Yadav said the course gave him exposure to management practices in various areas, which would be useful both for him and the organisation he works for.
Going by the words of Chandra, the programme was getting very good response. Over 300 people applied for the course this year of which, 66 have been admitted.
“We have not advertised PGPMAX internationally, yet we got 18 participants from abroad,” Chandra said, adding 68 per cent paid the fee on their own while 20 per cent of the students were sponsored by the organisations they were working with. The remaining 12 per cent received partial sponsorship.

Engineers To MBA

MBA Batch 2011-13: Engineers continue to dominate top B schools

The MBA has become a much sought after degree for the engineering students of our country. This is not just a mere statement, but a fact. The MBA tag has, it seems, become a must for the engineers who pass out from the technical institutions.

Most of the seats in top B-schools are filled with students from the engineering background. In some of the top B-schools, such as IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta, the percentage of MBA students with engineering background is more than 90%.

The batch profiles of students admitted in India’s B schools this year indicate the continuity of this trend. At IIM Indore the number of engineering students admitted to the 2011-13 batch, which has total size of 450, is 400+. It is interesting to note that of these 400+ students more than 35% have no work experience. This surely indicates that most of the engineering pass outs prefer to jump to a Bschool right after completing their course at their engineering school.

At IIM Calcutta of the total 462 students 93% students have an engineering background. More than 12% of these students have experience in finance and consulting, the preferred careers of graduates of this institute.

IIM Lucknow has also maintained its image as the destination for engineers with 82% of the batch of 419 students admitted this year having an engineering degree. 42 per cent students have less than a year’s work experience.

This trend is not just visible at the older IIMs, but also the new IIMs. At IIM Rohtak of the 124 students admitted this year 114 students belong to the engineering domain. 71 students have prior work experience.

The IIMs and other top B-schools like XLRI, MDI, IMT, are very well aware of the fact that major pie of MBA seats are taken by engineering students. In view of this the leading B-schools have been trying hard to add more colour to their campuses by taking in students from diverse disciplines. This years’ batch profiles indicate that the top B schools still remain good hunting ground for engineering background aspirants.

But the MBA aspirants should not be worried as there are many B-schools in the top league that take students from other educational backgrounds as well. XLRI Jamshedpur, SPJIMR Mumbai, NMIMS Mumbai, FMS Delhi, JBIMS Mumbai, IMI Delhi, BIMTECH Greater Noida are some of the top league B-schools that take non-engineering students in good numbers.
