Engineers To MBA

MBA Batch 2011-13: Engineers continue to dominate top B schools

The MBA has become a much sought after degree for the engineering students of our country. This is not just a mere statement, but a fact. The MBA tag has, it seems, become a must for the engineers who pass out from the technical institutions.

Most of the seats in top B-schools are filled with students from the engineering background. In some of the top B-schools, such as IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta, the percentage of MBA students with engineering background is more than 90%.

The batch profiles of students admitted in India’s B schools this year indicate the continuity of this trend. At IIM Indore the number of engineering students admitted to the 2011-13 batch, which has total size of 450, is 400+. It is interesting to note that of these 400+ students more than 35% have no work experience. This surely indicates that most of the engineering pass outs prefer to jump to a Bschool right after completing their course at their engineering school.

At IIM Calcutta of the total 462 students 93% students have an engineering background. More than 12% of these students have experience in finance and consulting, the preferred careers of graduates of this institute.

IIM Lucknow has also maintained its image as the destination for engineers with 82% of the batch of 419 students admitted this year having an engineering degree. 42 per cent students have less than a year’s work experience.

This trend is not just visible at the older IIMs, but also the new IIMs. At IIM Rohtak of the 124 students admitted this year 114 students belong to the engineering domain. 71 students have prior work experience.

The IIMs and other top B-schools like XLRI, MDI, IMT, are very well aware of the fact that major pie of MBA seats are taken by engineering students. In view of this the leading B-schools have been trying hard to add more colour to their campuses by taking in students from diverse disciplines. This years’ batch profiles indicate that the top B schools still remain good hunting ground for engineering background aspirants.

But the MBA aspirants should not be worried as there are many B-schools in the top league that take students from other educational backgrounds as well. XLRI Jamshedpur, SPJIMR Mumbai, NMIMS Mumbai, FMS Delhi, JBIMS Mumbai, IMI Delhi, BIMTECH Greater Noida are some of the top league B-schools that take non-engineering students in good numbers.
